We would begin with our 6th grade students and then continue with each grade level the following academic years. So it would take 7 years to get completely onboard with a 1 to 1 program. At this point, its up the superintend to make the decision and its probably going to be a funding issue as well. We would see some savings if we implemented the program but from my perspective we would be spending money to save money.
I think the idea is great and its one that we should embrace. It would make a big difference in the lives of students and I think they would benefit in the long run from such an endeavor.

Hi, Roman,
I am very interested in hearing about how the 1-to-1 initiative progresses in your school district. I was glad that we had someone in our group on Tuesday evening who actually had some experience involving the implementation of this type of program... hearing you talk about what is happening in your school district gave us a more personal perspective on the situation.
I agree that getting the 1-to-1 computing program up and running will be a huge challenge, especially for someone in your position, but I think it will be enormously beneficial to the students in the long run.
When you mentioned 7 years, well, I just never give that much thought to how much time is involved in implementing these types of programs. Whew!
Well, good luck and I look forward to hearing more about it!

And just think in the seven years it takes to fund all those computers you will have to start all over again in year eight replacing the first group's computers.
How will y'all manage updating the software that will be on the computers? Will the students be the ones to do this or your department (e.g. Windows updates)? Will the students be allowed to load whatever else they want to on "their" computer?
Some of our students live in very unsecure homes. What happens if through no fault of their own the computers get stolen? Tuesday night's class has really gotten me thinking about some of the obstacles.
Of course I can see MANY benefits too. At minimum, if each student could have access to their own computer at the point of need at school, that would be extremely helpful too.
Thanks for all your expertise during Tues. night's presentation.
Roman,
It's pretty cool to hear where Cobb County is at with all of this. Based on our conversation in our groups the other night, I know they are much farther ahead than Gwinnett (to my knowledge). Hopefully my system can learn from yours as you roll out 1-to-1 computing across the county. Again, though, it was nice to hear from someone who is in the middle of this. I wish you and the rest of the county luck as you roll this out!
